YMCA Life Skills

 

I.S.61 has partnered with the YMCA Counseling Service.  They will provide a special program called "Life Skills" which is a dynamic and developmentally appropriate substance abuse program and violence prevention program for middle school students. The program is delivered in a 15 session curriculum that has been shown to help improve self-esteem, develop healthy attitudes and improve their knowledge of essential life skills.  

 

Students who participate in Life Skills will learn about the following:

  • self Image and self Improvement

  • making decisions

  • smoking myths and realities

  •  smoking and biofeedback

  •  communication skills

  • alcohol myths and realities

  • coping with anxiety

  • coping with anger

  • marijuana myths and realities

  • advertising

  • violence and the media

  • social skills

  •  assertiveness

  • conflict resolution
